People in over a dozen regions in the southwest have been advised to 'take action' immediately due to flooding that poses a threat to life.

The Environment Agency has 14 red alerts in the region, in addition to 96 across the rest of the UK.

Forecasters are tipping 4 inches of rain in some areas.

They warn it could cause rapid flooding, prompting life-threatening alerts.

It's also expected to disrupt train and bus services, with roads blocked off and rivers overflowing their banks.

Andrew Morgan, the leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf council, said Sunday was a 'close call' after thousands of sandbags were sent to high-risk areas.

.

He said: "It's been a hectic day for the dozens of crews and teams on standby."

‘Overall, while there have been isolated problems with culverts, the majority of calls have been about surface water flooding and highway issues.’

‘Today has, I reckon, been a close call from rivers flooding in some areas. I'll be having a yarn with Natural Resources Wales in the coming days.’

Sarah Cook, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, said heavy and persistent rain had brought 'a risk of severe inland flooding in southern and central parts of Wales'.

She mentioned that localised flooding is also possible in south-west England and Cumbria this morning.

In the midst of the Met Office's weather warnings, some communities were advised they would be isolated due to flooded roads and that 'homes and businesses are likely to be inundated, causing damage to some buildings'.

Met Bureau forecaster Craig Snell said rain would gradually make its way eastwards across the UK, adding that today would largely be a 'day of sunshine and scattered showers'.

He said: 'By the time we get to lunchtime on Monday, the rain should have cleared most of the UK.

‘It's a fair dinkum, a lot more sunshine today, a bit less of a blow, especially down south, and that'll let the temperature rise a bit.’
