Millions to sweat through final summer burst of heat

Summer will give way to autumn on Saturday, but in the final days of the season, a last burst of heat will envelop much of the country, leaving millions feeling sweltering.

The heat is attributed to a high-pressure system over the Great Australian Bight, which is drawing hot, dry air south as it moves eastwards.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a maximum of 32 degrees for Sydney on Friday, which is the last day of summer, but the temperature is expected to be higher in the western suburbs.

Melbourne is expected to reach 34 degrees tomorrow, then drop back down to the mid-twenties for the rest of the week.

Brisbane's top temperatures are tipped to stay around 31 or 30 degrees all week, before dropping a bit with the arrival of rain expected to hit on Sunday.

Adelaide is forecast to hit 33 degrees today, with highs of 31 degrees expected for both Wednesday and Thursday, before a slight drop in temperature on Friday.

Temperatures are tipped to hover around the 30-degree mark next week.

The national capital is also getting ready for a scorcher, with a top of 34 degrees expected today, and temperatures in the high 30s to stick around until next week.

Perth will see temperatures of 30 to 33 degrees before a cool change arrives next Monday.

Hobart's forecast is looking for 28 degrees tomorrow, but it's a bit out of step with the rest of the country, with the mercury dropping into the low twenties for the rest of the week.

Darwin, meanwhile, will see highs of 33 and 34 degrees for the remainder of the week, along with forecast rain and possible storms, before getting hotter next week with Monday and Tuesday forecast to reach 35 degrees.

Weatherzone says that the Australian outback is in for even hotter conditions, with Birdsville in Queensland forecasted to reach top temperatures of 43 to 46 degrees consistently over the next week.
