Aussie teen breaks world mile record – again

A 19-year-old young bloke from Australia, Cam Myers, has gone and smashed the under-20 world record for the mile – for the second time.

On a Saturday in the US, Myers did the indoor mile in 3:47.48, smashin' his own record, which he'd just set last month – and equalled the Australian bloke, Ollie Hoare's, outdoor open record mark.

Mate, I knew I had a big one up my sleeve.

Youngest person in the world at the second attempt and the sixth-youngest runner ever to run the four-minute mile.

But it was his performance at the invitational bash in New York on January 25 this year – when he ran 3:53.12 and knocked two seconds off the world indoor under-20 mile record – that he confirmed his improvement from schoolboy to top bloke.

Saturday's record-breaking performance, when he came in third in the indoor Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games, really highlighted his rapid development.

He was beaten by America's Olympic bronze medallist Yared Nuguse, who broke the world record (3:46.63) in the 1500 metre race.

"G'day, I was thinkin' arond 3:48 or 3:49 would be magic, so I was as happy as a clam when I crossed the line," Myers said.

My coaches reckoned I'm good enough to run lap of honour against any bloke in the world for 1400 metres, so I had a go at that and managed to had a bit of gas in the tank at the finish. It was one of those race situations that worked out just right. I was able to take it easy and use my energy wisely, and at 200 to go, it felt like I still had 400 metres to go, so it was a good deadset.

Myers has smashed a record in every three races he's had a crack at this year, and it's also worth noting he was the national record holder over 3000 metres at a grand prix event in Boston, finishing in 7:33.12.

His record-breaking run on Saturday has also qualified him for the world athletics championships in Tokyo, Japan this September.

"Geez, what an incredible run. I definitely hoped to go under 3:50 to get into Tokyo and now I'm as happy as can be and over the moon. I heard I match Ollie Hoare's outdoor time. I'm just really stoked," he said.

In 2023, Myers was just nine days older than Jakob Ingebrigtsen was when the Norwegian superstar broke the famous mile-o-mark, but the Aussie schoolkid was faster than the bloke who'd go on to become the Tokyo Olympics champ.

Ingebrigtsen was 16 years and 250 days old when he ran 3:58.07 in May 2017, breaking the four-minute barrier and claiming the youngest record to date. Myers was 16 years and 259 days old when he ran 3:55.44.

Fair dinkum, young Perth sprinter Torrie Lewis has knocked up a cracking time in the 200m dash, clocking a personal best of 22.65s in her first indoor sprint. That's just a hair's breadth off the short track record set by Melinda Gainsford-Taylor back in 1995 - only 0.01s separates them.
