These surface tombs have vertical shafts that connect to underground rooms. Many of the site's mastabas were excavated in the 20th century, but one part of the site without any notable aboveground features was left without being studied.

The researchers believe they discovered an anomaly, consisting of a superimposed shallow structure and a more significant deeper structure," they explain in the study. The shallow structure, which has an L-shape, "was likely filled in with sand after it was built.

Beneath the radar scans that reveal the cavern structure attributed to Owen Jarus, another anomaly appears. Dubbed a "highly resistive anomaly," its contents remain unknown to the researchers, who speculate that it could be either hollow or filled with materials like sand and gravel.

While many questions still remain, the scans "point to the possibility that archaeological remains are present," say the researchers. "It is crucial that they are excavated right away in order to determine their purpose."

’s Garry Shaw.

He explains that Giza is home to additional L-shaped offering chapels, however, these are typically situated above ground.

He's still unsure what this anomaly signifies, but he believes it's definitely worth investigating further.
